ION Audio TAILGATER Portable Sound System Review

When it comes to football, and game day, there is a lot of fun to be had. One of the best, other than the actual game, is tailgating. Hanging out with friends, eating good food, and talking about the game is always fun. But what about tunes?

Thanks to the Ion TAILGATER, you are covered. The $149.99 MSRP TAILGATER looks like a small guitar amp and speaker. It has a built-in eight hour battery, and an iPod dock. Just connect your iPod and you have instant tunes. There are connections for two microphones. There are also volume controls for master volume, and for each of the two microphones and the iPod. The box is a ported design with a small part, a 6 ½ woofer, and a 1” tweeter and 20 watts of power. It also accepts other devices through a stereo RCA input. On the rear of the device there is also a series of LED lights to tell you the status of the battery life. A recharge takes 6 hours.

Construction quality appears good. The enclosure feels fairly solid, given my knock test a few times. But with it being electronic gear, I would not put it to the test by throwing it around. The volume controls are simple silver plastic, but gets the job done. Listed at over 20lbs. it does feel pretty solid.

The TAILGATOR proved to be simple to use. Just connect your iPod, select the songs to play, and crank up the volume. Your tailgate party is instantly livened up. Whether it is an actual tailgate party, a day at the beach, at the park, or just hanging out with neighbors in the driveway/garage, you have tunes.

I will say up front that this is not an audiophile speaker like my NHT Classic Three’s. I was not expecting audiophile sound. But what I did hear was fairly impressive, and was better than I expected. The 2-way ported design played well, and also pretty loud. While turning the volume up full blast yielded distortion, turning it down just a tad helped that.

To test out the sound quality, I threw a bit of different music at it, from Steve Miller Band, to Journey, to Madonna, it all played well and loud. It performed better than expected. The included microphone also sounded great. And for those of you that like karaoke and already know the words, you can sing along with the included microphone which is also pretty solidly made. There are individual volume controls, so you can have the music loud and the mic soft, or just the opposite. And with a 2nd input, you can connect up a 2nd microphone or other instrument.

If you or a loved one is an avid football fan, this could mean trips to the stadium for games. The ION TAILGATOR could be a fun addition and just what the party needed. As such it could make for a great gift for a loved one. I believe the TAILGATER is a great value, and as such has earned our Value award. Congrats! AKG K390 NC Active Noise Cancelling IEM Review

Another great gift idea is a nice pair of headphones. The AKG K390 NC is perfect for traveling. Not only are they extremely portable due to them being IEM’s, they are active noise canceling. This makes them perfect for the traveler who wants great sound.

The AKG has some great features. It is also compatible with the iPhone, and several of the Blackberry models. There is an in-line hands free microphone with a call control button. While it includes Active Noise Cancellation, passive use is also available. A mute button is also included. The jack is gold plated and has a 99.9% oxygen free cable. They also include a nice 2 year warranty. Frequency Response is listed as 12Hz-24 kHz. And the small in-line box for the Active Noise Canceling takes a single AAA battery.

The packaging was nice, as expected for a product at the $200 price point. Opening the box revealed a nice leather case, the small Active Noise Canceling box, and an airline adapter. I was impressed with the leather carrying case. Unzipping it revealed three internal mesh pockets. There was one on the right hand side that held the warranty card and instructions, and two on the left, one of which held the cables and additional tips. The cable attaches to the Active Noise Canceling box, and one is standard 3.5 mm, and the other for the iPhone. Two additional sets of ear tips were included, which seem a tad low. I was expecting to see 3 to 4 additional sizes. I was also surprised to see no cleaning tool. Construction quality appeared very good.

Turning first to Tommy Smith’s: Blue Smith album, I went to the track titled Rain Dance. The sax was very smooth, with excellent pitch definition. Imaging was very good. There was also excellent definition in the drums.

Since this is for the Christmas season, I next turned to Pat a Pan from Mannheim Steamroller’s: Christmas in the Aire album. This is about as good as I have heard this album. There is a lot of air in the flute. The several different percussion instruments were extremely crisp and clean sounding. I noticed resolution in the strings not previously heard before. As with most of Mannheim Steamroller’s music, there are a lot of instruments at play, and they all come individually heard and sounded wonderful!

Lastly, I wanted to test the bass response. The first track I turned to was PCD: Don’t cha. The AKG K390 NC threw a wide soundstage. Again, the sound was clean with lots of resolution. Vocals sounded natural. And when the bass kicked in, there was plenty of extension, and did so with authority. To test high output deep bass I turned to my old school trusty Techmaster P.E.B.: Bass Computer album. The track I turned to was Activate, followed by Time to Jam. The bass was deep, loud, and clean.

Now it is time to test the Active Noise Cancelling feature. I was glad to hear, or not hear, the performance. They did a great job in removing the low engine rumble. Keep in mind that Active Noise Cancelling is designed to cancel out the low engine rumble of jet, train, or bus engines. They will not remove all of the external noise. Thanks to this feature in the AKG K390 NC, traveling can now be less fatiguing. AKG does not list a percentage reduction for the noise cancelling. Other manufacturers have claimed around 85% reduction. The AKG K390 NC performed about on par with what appeared to be around 85%. The mute button also worked well, and there was an On/Off switch for passive use.

I tend to be a tad skeptical when reviewing headphones that also feature active noise canceling. A large portion of the cost goes into the noise canceling part of the product. So, these $200 MSRP headphones would not sound like $200 headphones. When compared to just standard headphones, I would probably expect them to compare more to those in the $100 price range. That is to say, I would expect that on a $200 pair like these, that $100 would have gone into the headphones and $100 into the active noise cancelling feature. I was pleasantly surprised that the AKG K390 NC is bucking this trend. The headphone performance when doing my critical listening performed better then expected! Kudos to AKG. They would compare to headphones closer to the $200 range.

The AKG K390 NC is a product that exceeded my expectations. They performed well on all fronts. And they did better than I expected. Based on that performance, we are happy to award them our Highly Recommended Award. Congratulation! At the $200 MSRP they are a bargain. RCA TH2002RDR-A MP3 Player Review

The design of the RCA TH2002RDR-A is fairly simply. The red case is rather elegant looking. The built in USB connector is simple to use. I also like how it uses a single AAA battery. Carry extra batteries, and there’s never a worry about needing a recharge. The touch buttons were sufficiently sensitive and not overly so, helping make it easy to use. Included with the player are instructions, earbuds, and a belt clip for the player.

There were also a sufficient amount of functions. It includes repeat, shuffle, and 5 preset EQ settings. They include: Flat, Bass, Pop, Rock and Jazz. The touch sensitive buttons consist of back, menu, +, -, rewind, fast forward, and play/pause. The buttons were sensitive to the touch and responded well. The display also was simple, but showed the necessities, which consisted of battery life, title, artist, and progress bar of where you are in the song. You are able to locate songs through play all songs, artists, albums or genres.

Using the included software was simple. There was no software disc to load. The RCA Easyrip software was preloaded onto the player. All you need to do is connect the player to a USB port. The RCA TH2002RDR-A is recognized as an external drive. Just select the software and it will not only walk you thru installation, but also transferring music onto the player.

Overall, the RCA TH2002RDR-A was easy to use, and the display was also easy to read. The sound quality was also decent. The price point of $40 MSRP does put them in the line of fire from stiff competition of the iPod Shuffle, which uses the ever popular iTunes software, and higher storage capacity. The iPod Shuffle however has no display. If you are looking for just a simple MP3 player, without too many features to confuse you, this player could be for you.
