The ROG Strix B550-E Gaming
ASUS built the ROG Strix B550-E Gaming with an eye towards AMD’s high-performance processors and dual or triple expansion card setups. The AM4 socket is flanked by a 14+2 power stage VRM for reliable performance under sustained loads from many-core CPUs, while reinforced PCIe x16 SafeSlots support multi-GPU action in two-way SLI or three-way CrossFireX setups for gamers and creators alike.
The B550-E’s six fan headers and dedicated AIO and pump headers allow for setups as simple or intricate as a given build requires. Q-Fan software controls with automatic fan speed detection and multiple presets make it easy to keep both temperatures and noise levels down. Dual M.2 slots can take in SSDs up to 110mm long, both covered by heatsinks to prevent thermal throttling under intense I/O loads. The ROG Strix B550-E features an Intel-powered 2.5 Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 controllers. There’s also Bluetooth 5.1 support on tap for wireless headsets, phones, and tablets.

USB connectivity is particularly plentiful on the ROG Strix B550-E: you get three USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectors (one Type-C and two Type-A), along with a smattering of USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 ports. ASUS has included a USB 3.2 Gen 2 front-panel connector for the latest crop of cases.

The high-end SupremeFX S1220A audio chip comes with a handy companion in the form of an Audio Type-C port for connecting headphones and headsets. A total of four strip headers are available—two standard headers and two Gen 2 addressable hook-ups with individual LED control, reduced latency, and automatic configuration support. All those diodes can be turned off with one click to give the board a stealthy black-ops look. Additional touches include BIOS FlashBack for updating firmware without a CPU and FlexKey reset button remapping.

The ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi)
The ROG Strix B550-F proves the point for builders who want a performance-oriented board with a healthy dose of luxury. The 12+2 power stage VRM is ready for top Ryzen™ chips, and 8+4-pin ProCool auxiliary power connectors with solid pins ensure steady and stable power delivery to those power stages.

This model includes Intel I255-V 2.5Gb Ethernet connectivity and Wi-Fi 6 support from an Intel AX200 adapter. The B550-F features SupremeFX S1220A audio codec and follows the distinctive visual standard of the ROG Strix family and looks plenty sharp on its own thanks to lighting zones and an integrated I/O shield. For customization, a user can add plenty of lights with RGB LED strip headers in both regular and Gen 2 addressable flavors—all with Aura Sync support for easy configuration.

The ROG Strix B550-I Gaming
The ROG Strix B550-I was designed for small builds with big ambitions. By design, Mini-ITX makes room for a single PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, but the compact form factor has other advantages. The B550-I can drive compatible DIMMs at speeds up to 5100MHz and beyond by taking advantage of the shorter trace length between the memory slots and the CPU. The 8+2 power stagevoltage regulator module is a fine fit for 3rd gen Ryzen™ chips. Active cooling on the VRM and an eight-pin connector with our ProCool II design ensures that power delivery remains stable in the tight confines of Mini-ITX enclosures.

The preinstalled I/O panel is kitted out with USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and Type-A ports, an Intel I225-V 2.5Gb Ethernet connector, and an Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 adapter. Small machines are more likely to have fast external storage attached, so ASUS added a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 connector for the latest cases. The 3.5-mm connectors are all LED lit in unique colors to allow for easy identification when connecting analog speakers, headsets, or microphones. There’s a companion noise-filtered Audio Type-C port for corresponding microphones and headsets, too.
The TUF Gaming B550-Plus
The TUF Gaming B550-Plus features 8+2 DrMOS voltage regulator module and the multiple generously sized heatsinks atop the VRM, chipset, and M.2 slots ensure all primary components stay cool under load. The main PCIe 4.0 x16 slot is backed by SafeSlot reinforcement for extra-heavy graphics cards, while a ProCool auxiliary connector with solid-core pins offers added peace of mind when using power-hungry CPUs.

The two M.2 slots both accept devices as long as 110mm, while the duet of PCIe x16 slots supports CrossFireX configurations. The rear panel includes USB ports of every modern type, and that loadout can be further expanded with Thunderbolt 3 connectivity thanks to an onboard header. A BIOS FlashBack button rests near one of the ports for CPU-less UEFI upgrades.

The TUF B550-Plus comes with 2.5 Gb Ethernet connectivity and there’s an M.2 E-key slot available for a Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 upgrade. The Realtek S1200A audio codec in this model is further enhanced by DTS Custom support for headset 3D surround sound virtualization, making movies and compatible games come alive with pinpoint-accurate positional audio.

The gray-and-black TUF Gaming aesthetic and its yellow accents is distinctive on its own, but this color palette also makes for a great canvas for additional lighting. A Gen 2 addressable RGB LED header and two standard headers can be wired to additional strips for easy visual customization.

The TUF Gaming B550M-Plus (Wi-Fi)
The TUF Gaming B550M-Plus (Wi-Fi) takes many of the features of the B550-Plus above and reconfigures them for the smaller microATX footprint. This board keeps the same pairs of PCIe x16 and M.2 slots as its ATX sibling. The main difference is that one of the M.2 slots takes in standard 80mm devices instead of longer 110mm units. In exchange, this model offers a more attractive price tag to go with its trimmed dimensions.

The B550M-Plus comes in two variants: with or without an Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 controller and antennas. No matter which you pick, you still get 2.5 Gb Ethernet connectivity, Realtek S1200A audio with DTS Custom support, and a host of fan and RGB LED headers that includes Gen 2 addressable strip connectors.

The Prime B550-Plus
This top of the line Prime motherboard is ready to power a mid-range gaming rig or serve as a solid foundation for an AMD-powered productivity system. This model is right at home powering midrange Ryzen™ chips, and it comes fitted with heatsinks atop the VRM and chipset to ensure stability.

The dual PCIe x16 slots support CrossFireX if a user needs dual-GPU action for their system, while the duo of M.2 slots accepts 110 mm drives. If the USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports around back aren’t enough, you can add an optional ThunderboltEX 3 card and hook it up to the provided header for even more peripheral bandwidth. The Prime B550-Plus’ neutral palette is understated enough to fit into any build, but it’s also a fine canvas for deployment under colored case lighting.

The Prime B550M-A (Wi-Fi)
Space in offices and bedrooms is often at a premium, making the Prime B550M-A (Wi-Fi) a better option to go into places where an ATX build might not. This variation on the B550-Plus offers nearly the same specs but uses the compact microATX form factor.

Due to the Wi-Fi 6 standard, this motherboard is now perfectly viable to use the airwaves in situations where users would previously need a cable. For that reason, ASUS offers the B550M-A with Gigabit Ethernet only or in a version with an Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 adapter.

The Prime B550M-K
A compact microATX form factor lets builders save on space without sacrificing expandability, and both the main PCIe x16 slot and M.2 slot are wired directly to the processor with latest-gen PCIe 4.0 connectivity for maximum bandwidth with next-gen devices.

The board can take in two M.2 devices, one of them of the longer 110 mm variety. The rear I/O panel contains two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports along with four USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectors, ensuring that your peripherals enjoy plenty of bandwidth. HDMI, DVI-D, and D-sub ports give the B550M-K plenty of versatility for processors with integrated graphics.

The Cobra Elite Road Scout came in a nice looking color printed box with photos and specs of the device. Opening the box revealed a well protected device held in a nice hard zipper case. Materials used in the construction was mostly plastic. Quality of the materials used was excellent, as was the fit and finish. The Cobra Elite Road Scout is a premium product and it shows. Also included was a hard zipper case, windshield mount, power cord, USB cord, micro USB Cord and owner’s manual.

I love the design of the Cobra Elite Road Scout. It takes a radar detector and dash cam and combines them into one device. And you get advanced features for each functionality. So now you can have both a radar detector and dash cam with just one device on your dash. And for potential use in multiple vehicles, it also comes with a hard zipper case. The magnetic mount is awesome!

The Cobra Elite Road Scout is an advanced radar detector, with premium features. Sure it had long range radar detection, with multiple frequencies and radar type detection, and protects against false alerts. It also has built-in GPS. Thanks to the built-in GPS, and the built-in database, there are alerts for red light and speed cameras. It will even display your current speed. And Cobra has a defender subscription to keep the database updated. There’s even wi-fi and Bluetooth built in.

For use as a dashcam, the Cobra Elite Road Scout has you covered there as well. Videos are recorded in high definition 1080P, and the camera is optimized for both day and night recording. The built-in G- sensor provides input detection. Thanks to wi-fi built in, you can even connect to it through your smartphone using Cobra’s app to view videos. And thru the wi-fi connection and GPS it can even have your location, date, and time embedded into your videos. It even records audio.

Cobra didn’t stop with the advances features. They also made the Cobra Elite Road Scout easy to use. Only the power button is located on top. Everything else is located on the front. On the left side are buttons for mute, sensitivity and brightness. On the right is the mark button and rotary dial. The design and layout of the buttons is really simple to use and easy to learn. And I love the Cobra app that you can download onto your phone, to control the video and alerts in real time. Now let’s see how it works.

Installation was really easy. I absolutely love the magnetic windshield mount. The suction cup is strong, holding it firmly onto the glass. The bottom of the mount is a magnet, and the top of the Road Scout also has a magnet. Just set the Road Scout close to the magnet and it gets sucked into place. Installing the app on my LG ThinQ V40 smartphone was easy, and so was registering the Road Scout on Cobra’s website. Registering the Cobra Road Scout will get you 90 days free of the Defender Database service. This updates the location of red light cameras and speed cameras. Both of the iRadar and Drive HD apps were also very easy to download and get setup with the Road Scout. Following the well written and easy to follow app was a sinch. The iRadar app was really cool. I love the way you can use it to send updates, such as if there is a new speed trap. And the Drive HD app was also equally cool. Open the app, and you can see in realtime the image that the camera sees. You can also manage the video on the Road Scout; genius!

I also love the design of the Cobra Road Scout. The color LCD display was nice and bright and easy to see in the daylight. Other than the power button on the top, all of the buttons are on the front. And I LOVE the rotary knob as well, such as controlling volume. A rotary knob is found on so many different devices. But finding a rotary knob on a radar detector…my mind was blown!  Genius again!

The Cobra Road Scout performed in spades. I was working with the apps, not paying attention, when the radar detector went off. About a quarter mile further up the road there he was. I think it saved me a ticket! There were a few times that it went off, and I could see the highway patrolman. Only one time did it go off and I couldn’t see him. But it does have a really good range, so it’s possible that I could not see him. It’s performance against false alarms appears to be very good. The built-in GPS worked very well. It displayed my current speed which matched pretty close to the speed on the speedometer, only off by 1mph. And when I went over the set max speed, I got a verbal warning from the Road Scout that I was exceeding the set speed. It truly is a Road Scout!

The video performance of the built-in dash cam was also very good.  It recorded very well onto the included microSD card.  And thru the app I was able to view my video content.  It was easy to see the resolution provided with the 1080P video.  I clicked on a couple of the prerecorded videos thru the app.  One of them was a little glitchy and didn’t do a good recording, which can happen on any device.  But the others worked great.  The resolution was great, enabling me to see everything in front of me.  And the colors looked great with good color saturation. Night images can be very difficult to record.  But I was able to again see everything in front of me in good resolution, with no image noise. I was also impressed with the field of view that was recorded, giving a nice wide field of view in front of me.  At night it recorded well the entire area in front of me that was directly lit with my headlights.  When you got out of the headlights, you started to lose details until it was blackness, which again is expected. I had forgotten about the audio recording, as it was funny hearing the music playing in the background or the conversations I had on the phone or with my family passengers.  The mic did a great job recording the conversations in the cabin.

At the end of the day, I was pleasantly unsurprised by the performance of the Cobra Road Scout which is probably one of the best compliments to give. Cobra has a strong reputation for high quality products, and it’s nice to see them not just sitting on their laurels. With an MSRP of $449, it’s not for everyone. But for its rock solid performance, and ultra cool advanced functionality though the two apps, it’s worth every penny. Based on its design, features, quality and performance, the Cobra Elite Road Scout has earned our Editor’s Choice Award. For more info and complete specs, check out their website at www.cobra.com.

Artison Introduces Next Generation Architectural Subwoofers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Artison Introduces Next Generation Architectural Subwoofers

Hyannis, MA. May 14th, 2020 — Artison®, a Savant company dedicated to the design of premium performance architectural loudspeakers, has unveiled two new models of next generation Reactance Cancelling Configuration (RCC) architectural subwoofers. Building upon Artison's past performance and innovations, the Mark II series of RCC subwoofers offer increased output levels, exceptional dynamics, lower distortion, and a significant increase in efficiency.

RCC160 MKII In-ceiling Subwoofer (pair)

Designed to deliver exceptionally and evenly distributed bass reinforcement from the ceiling, the Artison RCC160 MKII provides a balanced, blended audio experience utilizing multiple points of sound. The RCC160 MKII is a perfect fit for active entertainment spaces such as great rooms, where integrators must deliver superior sound even as people move throughout the space.

When the RCC160 MKII is coupled with Savant's Micro Aperture in-ceiling speakers, this outstanding full-range loudspeaker combination delivers a musical soundscape that is rich in dynamics and detail, plus delivers a perfect grille match required by top architects and specifiers. The square and round grilles are just 4.65 inches in diameter and are a perfect match for Savant’s Micro Aperture speaker family as well as USAI Lighting Recess 4.5 fixtures, delivering a visually clean ceiling that includes subwoofers, speakers and lighting fixtures. Also included, the rectangular grille is designed to blend in with in-ceiling HVAC registers when applicable. Each RCC160 MKII aluminum enclosure features two 4-inch by 6-inch drivers generating the approximate surface area of an 8-inch circular woofer from an impressively small package.

RCC320 Mark II In-wall/In-ceiling Subwoofer

Designed for both in-wall and in-ceiling installations, the Artison RCC320 MKII delivers even greater output, perfect for dedicated music or theater rooms. The RCC320 MKII employs four 4-inch by 6-inch subwoofer drivers per unit in an extruded aluminum enclosure perfectly engineered for tight spaces, with easy pre-construction or retrofit installation into a standard 2 x 4 stud bay. The Artison RCC320 MKII can be specified with a discrete speaker grille or an HVAC-style ceiling grille. For installations that require stacked pairs of RCC320 MKII’s, a single double-length discrete speaker grill can be ordered.

Efficient Amplification

Rated at 1000 watts, the RCC1000-SA DSP-enabled amplifier is powerful and features all-new firmware that was developed specifically for the Mark II series subwoofers. The 1U digital amplifier can drive up to four RCC320 MKII or eight RCC 160 MKII simultaneously, making installations featuring multiple subwoofers both cost and space-efficient on a per-zone basis.

“As we acknowledged the changing ways that families interact within their homes, which include more active spaces that require excellent sound reproduction, we were challenged to develop a low-frequency driver that not only fit into small spaces but also delivered twice the acoustical output, twice the excursion, and twice the sensitivity of previous solutions,” explained Artison founder Cary Christie explained. “With the MK II series subwoofers, we surpassed every preconception of what we had thought was possible."

About Reactance Cancelling Configuration (RCC) Technology

In 2005, Artison was the first to market with Reactance Cancelling Configuration (RCC) Technology simply designed against Newton’s law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  In subwoofers, the motion of the driver’s cone creates an opposite force that is a common cause of vibration distortion present in conventional subwoofers. Artison's RCC configuration places an equal number of electrically in-phase drivers opposing one another so that the reactance forces from each driver mechanically cancel themselves, eliminating unwanted distortion.

RCC160 MKII or RCC320 MKII subwoofers are available to order now on the Savant Store, for information on becoming a direct dealer contact Steve Silberman at steve.silberman@savant.com

About Artison

Founded in 2003 and known for countless architectural loudspeaker innovations, Artison’s mission is to create visually unobtrusive loudspeakers that deliver the most accurate and involving experience for music and movie playback while holding the need for aesthetic integration to the highest standard. It is through the understanding of physics and acoustical science that we achieve this perfect balance.

CAKE and Polestar Announce Expanded Brand Partnership

The electric vehicle brands strengthen their relationship

CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric motorcycles, and Polestar, the electric performance automobile brand owned by Volvo Car Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding, today announced an expanded brand partnership to showcase CAKE’s electric motorcycles into Polestar’s showrooms in Europe, to start with.

The two Swedish companies began collaborating in 2019 when the CEOs of both organizations recognized the shared brand values of their businesses. Scandinavian design, electric powertrains, and a new take on marketing, brand, and retail are just a few of the similarities that made both companies eager to collaborate.

“Polestar feels a kinship with CAKE, sharing both a belief in redefining performance and a passion for design. Our desire to help create an electrified and emission-free future is a clear bridge between us,” commented Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath.

CAKE will collaborate with Polestar for events and customer interactions, affording both brands the opportunity to reach new audiences and to drive an exchange around a new, more sustainable future in which electric transportation serves a central role.

“The motorcycle industry is undergoing a similar shift towards electrification as the automotive industry. And with respect to those shifts, CAKE is ahead of the curve,” remarked CAKE founder and CEO, Stefan Ytterborn. “CAKE urges people to explore with respect and speed up the transition towards a zero-emission society. We feel our high-tech bikes, with a beautiful design, inspired people to do exactly that.”

About Polestar

Polestar is the electric performance car brand jointly owned by Volvo Car Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding. Polestar enjoys specific technological and engineering synergies with Volvo Cars and benefits from significant economies of scale as a result.
