Amazing Accessories For Your Samsung Galaxy Tabs and Cell Phones

So now you have your portable device, such as a new cell phone or tablet PC. Are you done now? I would suggest not. After all, how much did you pay for it? Do you want to buy another one because you damaged it? Do you want to get the most productivity out of it? It is time to look at accessories.

When it comes to protecting your portable device, it needs a good case. And it doesn't get much better than Otterbox. For review is their rugged Defender Series cases for the HTC Evo 3D, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7. The case for the HTC Evo 3D features a snap-on Hand plastic shell with a clear plastic screen cover built-in. A rubber cover then fits over the hard plastic shell. The case also gives you full access to all the connectors and buttons for the phone. I really like the built-in protection for the camera sensors and LED flashes. The design of the HTC Evo 3D has the camera sensors sticking out just slightly, so they are easy to scratch. But that won't happen with the Otterbox case. There is also a third piece that is a hard plastic belt clip that the case snaps into. This case is amazing!

The Otterbox case for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 is also very good. It is the exact same type of design, featuring a hard plastic shell with built in screen protector and a rubber cover that fits over the hard plastic. And again, you have access to all of the buttons and connectors, such as headphone jack and charger. It has a hard plastic shell that it snaps into. This hard plastic cover also has a built-in mechanism that props up the tablet and acts as a stand. Very cool.

The Commuter Series for Samsung Epic 4G is also a great case. The Commuter Series does not have the same level of protection as it lacks the soft rubber of the Defender Series, but it still works well. It's a two piece case with a hard plastic bottom that snaps on, and a hard plastic top with built in screen protector. Quality of both the Defender and Commuter Series is all very good.

Samsung also has some great accessories for their Galaxy Tab 10.1, to further compete with the iPad. To start off, Samsung has a pair of cases for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. First is a simple Leather Pouch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 slides into. While it does not provide much protection against drops, it does protect against scratches, etc. They also have a nice hard Book Cover Case that also doubles as a basic stand to prop up the tablet. There are also cut outs for items such as the headphone jack and camera. And while it provides about the same level of protection as the slip case, I do like it. Next up are the Multi-Media Dock and Keyboard Dock. The Multi-Media Dock will not only allow you to charge your Galaxy tab 10.1, It also has an audio out and HDMI out. Now while you are charging your tablet, the Multi-Media Dock holds up your tablet making it easily viewable, allowing you to check email or do anything else on it. The audio out makes it easy to connect it to your stereo or a pair of powered speakers so you can listen to your music in a big way. And the HDMI out lets you connect your tablet to your HDTV with an HDMI cable. Now you can watch those movies or camcorder footage you recorded in your tablet on your HDTV. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 Keyboard Dock is also a charging dock with an audio output, like the Multi-Media Dock (without the HDMI output) only it also adds a full-sized soft touch keyboard for your use.

Quality, fit, and finish were very good on all of the Samsung accessories. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not seem like it would be very sturdy in the smallish slot the tablet slid into on both the Multi-Media and Keyboard Docks. But it surprisingly was. The keyboard had a great feel to it, and I liked the extra buttons for features control such as volume, home page, etc. Both products worked as well as advertised, but of the two I preferred the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Keyboard Dock. You can type on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the on screen keyboard, but the keyboard dock works so much better. And it makes it feel like you are almost transforming the tablet to a laptop, getting the best of both worlds. But for those of you that do a lot of multimedia on your tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Multi-Media dock is a great accessory that you can set next to your HDTV and connect right up to it with an HDMI cable. Just don't try to get DRM content from your tablet to your HDTV over HDMI. Home recorded movies work great.

Accessories may not be necessary, but if you want to protect your device, a case is the best way to do it. And accessories such as the keyboard dock also help to get productivity up. Both of the Otterbox Defender Series cases have earned our Editor's Choice award and the Commuter Series has earned our Highly Recommended award. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Bookcover Case and Multi-Media Dock has earned our Highly Recommended awards, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Keyboard Dock has earned our Editor's Choice award. Congrats! Kingston Technology’s HyperX Memory Breaks TWO World Records!

Fountain Valley, CA -- July 29, 2011-- Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced that its fastest dual-channel memory kit, HyperX® 2544MHz (Kingston® part #: KHX2544C9D3T1FK2/2GX), was clocked at 2902MHz with CL6 and 3082 MHz with CL7 timings, during a heavy home overclocking session in France.

These are the fastest ever recorded frequencies for memory with CL6 and CL7 latencies. They were achieved by the renowned overclockers Benjamin Bouix aka ‘Benji Tshi’ and

Jean-Baptiste Gerard aka ‘Marmott’ using liquid nitrogen as a cooling aid. The sessions were run on a GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6C (bios F10) motherboard with an Intel® Core i7™ 870 processor.

“This is the first time we have overclocked this module and the speeds achieved are very impressive,” said French overclocking champion Jean-Baptiste Gerard aka ‘Marmott’. “HyperX KHX2544C9D3T1FK2/2GX has the potential to go even faster but unfortunately we were restricted by CPU performance so we can’t wait until the next OC session to beat our own records!”

This device, when paired with the free app, effortlessly converts your iPhone and/or iPod touch into an impressively smart universal remote control, and offers additional features unlike any other on the market.

The VooMote One slides onto your iPhone with ease, while still allowing full control of the iPhone itself. Once the device is connected and the app loaded, it instantly transforms your iPhone into a fully functional universal remote for your TVs, DVD players, stereo systems, consumer electronics and more, ultimately eliminating the need to have several remotes to control your consumer electronics.

What sets the VooMote One apart from the rest is its innovative customization options, and easy setup. With VooMote One you can utilize the “One View” feature, which allows the user to create personalized and multiple device remote control layouts. Meaning you can easily lower the volume on the stereo while pressing play on your favorite DVD in a matter of seconds. So with the press of one button you can turn on your TV, turn on your DVD player, and hear all of the action on your surround sound speakers.

The VooMote One setup wizard only entails a few quick steps. Once setup is complete you have the option to further organize your universal remote with the “Room Control” feature. This groups all of your electronic devices by location, such as living room, kitchen, etc. Also, the “Teach-In” feature is accessible should the VooMote One need to “learn” some of your products, by simply pointing the device at your original remote control.

The VooMote One automatically captures more than 30,000 infrared codes and thousands of electronic devices. It recognizes 574 TV brands, 995 Top Box/DVR brands, and 151 audio and CD brands. The VooMote One code library is also constantly being update to ensure that virtually all IR (infrared) codes are available.

VooMote One is also especially easy to set up, no PC necessary. All settings can be adjusted using the software on your iPhone or iPod touch. The app itself also automatically updates via iTunes to add the most up to date infrared codes.

Alpine CDE-123 Car Receiver Review by Jeff Roy

For review today is the Alpine CDE-123 Receiver. I never cease to be amazed at the improvements in technology. They always add additional features to make our listening experience more enjoyable. I remember when Satellite Radio and iPod connectivity were added. Now the new big feature is Pandora. It's all about allowing consumers to listen to what we want to listen to, whether it be radio, CD, iPod, or now Pandora. Alpine has been an innovator, and continues to bring these features in their products.

20 years ago, my first car stereo receiver was an Alpine tape deck with music search. It was a high quality deck that performed very well. I'm glad to see that things have not changed for Alpine. The Alpine CDE-123 Receiver appears to be a great mainstream level of product with an MSRP of $199.95. I'm glad to see the Pandora feature on a receiver at this price point.

It's features and specs include:

Quality was very good. The Alpine CDE-123 was well packaged. It's accessories included the head unit, power cable, USB cable, iPod cable, user manual, faceplate case, mounting screws, mounting sleeve, and bracket key. Construction and fit and finish was on par for a car receiver. Cables were also well labled as is standard on car receivers. The faceplate comes off easy enough with a push of a button. And putting it back on with a snap in place has a secure feel. The display was also easy to read. Navigation through the settings was also similarly easy.

Running through he menus were simple and easy to understand. And I was impressed with the level of control you have over your sound at this price point. You had your typical adjustments for treble, bass, and subwoofer, but you also had midrange as well. Also included were the typical balance, fader, and loudness, but you also got defeat. Defeat will adjust the sound adjustments back to factory default.

I was again surprised at the level of customization of the sound. You basically have a 3 band parametric EQ. Your bands are treble, midrange and bass. With each of these bands you can choose the center frequency, the level of curve, and the amount of the boost. There were also II DSP presets, such as rock and jazz, for example. For subwoofers you have control of the crossover frequency, level of boost and phasing.

Other features are fairly typical with Radio, CD, iPod and XMSirius control (with optional tuner), front and rear auxiliary inputs, as well as front USB input. I also can't forget Bluetooth and Pandora Radio. For and MSRP of $199.95, that's quite a mouthful.

The radio features were as I would expect. There were 12 FM presets as well as 6 AM presets. Tuning was done either seek of manual. CD transport functionality provided play, mix, repeat, and search. And it could also handle MP3/WMA/AAC formats. And of course iPod control is complete, which is almost a necessity these days.

From looking at the deck, it was also obvious that Alpine took a lot of thought into making Pandora Radio listening user friendly, such as New Station, Bookmarks, and of course the big buttons with the backlit thumbs up and thumbs down.

And all of this engineering came together really well when actually using the receiver. The display was bright and easy to read, even in daylight. All of the buttons were responsive. The CD mechanism worked well, with loading and ejecting CD's. Radio sensitivity and sound quality was not the greatest, but sufficient. Going into the menu's and custom tailoring the sound to my liking was pleasantly simple. Playing and switching to different tracks was also done without any problems.
Hooking up and controlling my iPod was also very easy, and my music came out loud and clear. It was nice to see the necessary cable for the iPod was also included.
Pandora Radio was also a joy to use. I was able to hear songs I like come there, which I gave the appropriate thumbs up as well as the occassional thumbs down, to help Pandora better figure out what my taste in music was. And being able to bookmark a song I really like was a bonus! For those of you who already use Pandora...well, you already know. For those of you who don't know, jump on board! It's really cool!! I was surprised that after several songs, and skipping ahead a few times......no commercials. Although I am not sure that is an Alpine feature, I enjoyed it! I kept skipping tracks until I could not skip anymore, trying to get a commercial to come on, and then changed channels. Still no commercials. And I liked the mix feature that mixed up songs from all my stations. Pandora Radio worked very well on the deck! But just so you know, it is designed on the CDE-123 for the iPhone and iPod. Pandora listening through my wife's android phone did not work. It requires the iPhone or iPod Touch for Pandora Radio.

This again was one of those pleasantly unsurprised product reviews. After all, it is an Alpine. And it performed like one. And for what you get under the hood, so to say, it is a fair price to pay. Based on it's quality, features, and performance, the Alpine CDE-123 has earned our Highly Recommended award. For more info and complete specs, check out their website at www.Alpine-usa.com. Reference gear used included Vibe Audio Space 6 3D components, Alpine Type-X SPX-13PRO component speakers, dual Diamond Audio D6 12" subwoofers, Vibe Audio LiteBox Stereo 4 and Vibe Audio BlackDeath Bass 1 amplifiers, AudioControl DQXS Six Channel Electronic Equalizer/Crossover.

Bowers & Wilkins Introduces New CI 300 Custom Installation Series and ISW-3 Subwoofer

N. Reading, MA—July 2011—Just a little over a year ago, Bowers & Wilkins launched the CI600 and CI700 in-wall and in-ceiling loudspeaker systems which ushered in levels of performance, visual appeal and ease of installation that set new standards at their price points.

Now, B&W announces the CI300 series, an entry-level priced range designed for installations for which budgets are a consideration. "Our high-value, high-performance in-wall and in-ceiling CI 300 speakers are entry-level in price only," says Doug Henderson, V.P. Sales & Marketing. "The same acoustic and industrial design teams that created the higher-end ranges, led by Dr. John Dibb, developed the CI 300 models. From sound quality to installation mechanics, the CI 300s are extremely well-executed designs that have no peers at their price points."

There are three models in the CI 300 series: the CWM362, CCM362, and CCM382. The CCM362 ($300/pr) is an in-ceiling model with a 6-inch polypropylene cone bass/midrange driver and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. The CCM382 ($400/pr) is a larger in-ceiling speaker with the same 1-inch soft dome tweeter but with an 8-inch bass/midrange driver to provide deeper bass and higher sensitivity. The CWM362 ($400/pr) is a two-way, in-wall speaker based on the CCM362’s driver set. (Pictured is the model CCM362)

The CI300 models feature the same thin bezeled frame as the CI600 models, and the ceiling models can be used with optional square grille adapters designed to match popular in-ceiling lighting designs. They share the same cutout sizes, so PMKs and backboxes can be used interchangeably. Swing-out dogs and spring-clip wire terminals keep installation simple and easy.

The CI300 models have been designed with high moisture resistance for use in bathrooms, indoor pool areas, and more. Shallow in depth, the CCM362 is only 3.2” deep, and the CWM362 is 3” deep, to fit in 3” stud bays (assuming at least ½-inch Sheetrock.)

“While the new 300 Series has been designed for budget applications, the performance is clearly first rate.” continues Henderson. All drivers, crossovers components, and construction materials have been specified and evaluated by the best ears in the business. The sound is unmistakably B&W.”

The CI300 Series is the latest step in the revamping of the entire Custom Installation line.

Versatile Subwoofer: The ISW-3

The ISW-3 was born out of input from custom installers, particularly in the U.S., who were looking for an installation subwoofer with as close to a “zero visual footprint” as possible.

The ISW-3 features a unique forward-facing vent with a slotted grille that allows for installation into millwork and kitchen cabinets while venting through the base or toe kick, or it can be installed in walls, floors, or ceilings.

The subwoofer’s two 6.5” long-throw drivers vent through a 2 x 12” HVAC-type slot. Thanks to the balanced driver design, mechanical energy is not transmitted to the enclosure, thus eliminating any rattling of glassware or dishes even as plenty of deep bass is pumped into the room. The ISW-3 can vent directly through its slot facing forward, at which point it is only 9.25” deep (by 18.5” tall), or it can used with a unique right angle adaptor for placement on its face, taking up minimal height inside a cabinet. Placement choice is optional depending on the installation requirement. It is only 13” wide, designed to fit within many truss-style joists.

The ISW-3 is powered by a MkII version of the existing SA-250 rack mount amplifier. The SA-250MkII offers an external EQ switch setting for either the ISW-3 or ISW-4 in-wall subwoofer, plus a stereo summing input for distributed audio applications. A single SA-250MkII can power two ISW-3 or two ISW-4.

Of course, the ISW-3 had to be more than clever to please the Bowers & Wilkins engineers. With usable, low-distortion bass output down to a very respectable 21Hz, it is a true subwoofer. No energy is lost through pliable “vent hoses” and the like—the box is as solid as a rock, for clean output. Whether for distributed music or for stealth media-room applications, the ISW-3 will allow consumers to see nothing while hearing everything.

Availability & Suggested Retail Pricing: The ISW-3 and SA-250MkII will be available in mid-summer 2011. Both will retail for USD $1,000 each.

Bowers & Wilkins is proud to announce C5 in-ear, noise-isolating headphones.

C5 in-ear, noise-isolating headphones offer pristine sound quality on the move. The innovative Secure Loop design keeps the C5 comfortably in place, and aids fit and performance. Plus the proprietary Micro Porous Filter enables the C5 to produce a wonderfully open, natural performance, perfect for longer listening sessions.

N. Reading, MA—July 11, 2011—Bowers & Wilkins’ debut of the C5 in-ear headphones brings the option of amazing clarity of sound, innovative design and high-quality materials for the discerning customer who demands premium performance from in-ear headphones.

Best in class sound quality is an attribute long associated with Bowers & Wilkins products. From the 800 Series Diamond to Zeppelin Air to the highly-regarded P5 mobile hi-fi headphones, Bowers & Wilkins products have stood out within their respective categories for 45 years. C5 takes this quality to a new arena: in-ear headphones.

As with all Bowers & Wilkins products, C5 is a mixture of long-held acoustic principles and technological advances. Key among the advances is the Micro Porous Filter. This acts as a diffuser, enabling C5 to deliver pristine, natural audio, while also providing a more spacious performance than previously possible from in-ear headphones. It also has the advantage of limiting noise bleed, and together with the noise-isolating properties of the sealed fit, this allows users to lose themselves in flawless audio.

Almost as vital as performance in the in-ear headphone arena is comfort and quality of fit. C5 addresses this with the introduction of the proprietary Secure Loop design, an ingenious innovation where a cushioned loop fixes quickly and comfortably in the inner ridge of the user’s ear. This solution holds C5 in place for improved sound, and also makes it ideal for use on the move and during activities. The Secure Loop is infinitely adjustable, so it works perfectly with anyone’s ears.

Adding to this sense of comfort is C5’s Tungsten Balanced design. Here, high-mass material is located closer to the user’s ear, for an improved seal for better sound and noise isolation. Elsewhere C5 is crafted from high-grade aluminum for a premium-quality finish.

C5 comes supplied with a Made For iPhone compatible cable, which is ideal for making calls on the move, and a quilted pouch for easy storage.

For additional information visit::http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/Headphones/Headphones/C5/product-details.html

C5 is available August 2011 and will cost $179.95 (U.S. & Canada)

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – July 19, 2011 – D-Link today announced the integration of OpenDNS technology into select D-Link® routers, enabling households to block unsafe and inappropriate Web content such as adult and phishing websites – all right at the source of the home network – the router. With OpenDNS technology, D-Link routers offer consumers Web content filtering and security services, ensuring that all connected devices in the household, from laptops to gaming consoles, are guarded from unsuitable online content via the built-in and fully customizable OpenDNS parental control solution.

“As more children gain access to the Internet through computers, mobile devices and gaming consoles, parents are in need of an easy security solution to protect against unwanted Internet content and threats,” says Daniel Kelley, associate vice president of consumer marketing, D-Link North America. “D-Link routers featuring OpenDNS offer easy-to-use parental controls for all your network-connected devices right at the router – delivering comprehensive, family-safe network security and performance without the need for setting controls on each device.”

Featuring D-Link’s superior connectivity performance, the company’s routers with OpenDNS technology offer an easy way to filter unsafe or inappropriate materials with faster and more reliable access to the Internet, making Web pages load faster and ridding households of annoying intermittent Internet outages. OpenDNS parental controls divide websites neatly into more than 50 categories, allowing parents to choose their desired filtering level from “high” to “minimal.” Households can further customize Web filtering to include certain categories of websites like “social networking” or “gambling” and even block specific sites that they view as a threat to online safety. In addition, OpenDNS parental controls are constantly updated to keep up with the growing amount of new websites, ensuring continued protection against offensive Internet content 24 hours a day.

With OpenDNS, D-Link now delivers the same favorite and trusted security solution used by one in three schools nationwide, and in millions of households. The integration of OpenDNS on D-Link routers makes it easier than ever before for D-Link customers to use OpenDNS and keep their families safe online.

“Integrating OpenDNS on D-Link consumer routers is a win for households everywhere as it makes securing your home Internet from any content you deem unsafe extremely fast and easy. HGI breakthrough paves the way for home energy management, home automation, diagnostics and other next gen apps in the connected home

HGI breakthrough paves the way for home energy management, home automation, diagnostics and other next gen apps in the connected home

Service providers closer to deploying new next gen services to the digital home following publication of requirements by The Home Gateway Initiative software execution taskforce

19 July 2011. The Home Gateway Initiative (HGI), the world’s leading organisation for setting requirements for the building blocks of the digital home, has published a landmark document which brings service providers closer to making more next generation applications a reality.

HGI-RD008-3, “Requirements for Software Modularity on the Home Gateway” sets requirements that support software applications on the Home Gateway within a flexible, managed framework.

Duncan Bees, chief technical and business officer for HGI, said: “We are leading the way with this new document. Service providers are looking at deploying next generation applications using the Home Gateway and this document takes a major step towards making home automation, energy management and diagnostics, along with other next generation applications, a reality,” he said.

Mr Bees added that plans are already in place to considerably extend the scope of software modularity testing at a 2011 test event in the UK later this year.

Andreas Sayegh of Deutsche Telekom has played an integral role in bringing the RD008 document as well as the associated testing programme to fruition.

“This work has been completed thanks to the cooperation and input of vendors and service providers in the HGI working together. We have now set requirements allowing service providers to make progress, applying what has been learned to real world conditions. For consumers this will definitely mean tangible new services as a direct result of this work,” he said.

The next quarterly meeting of HGI members is set to take place in Chicago between 5 - 9 September 2011 with the timing of the test event yet to be announced.

For more information about the HGI please visit www.homegatewayinitiative.org or email contact@homegatewayinitiative.org.

Patriot Torqx 2 128GB SSD Drive Review by Jeff Roy

The better computers are, the faster they are. But, you are only as good as the weakest link. When it comes to computers, the weakest link tends to be the hard drive. Up for review today is the Patriot Torqx 2 128GB SSD hard drive.
Not only is it fast, it is also much more reliable. If you are asking yourself what an SSD drive is, think of it as a small flash drive or thumb drive on steroids. You know, the little things that are easily found in sizes now of up to 16 GBs? I remember when standard hard drives were about that size.
Hard drives also tend to be the source of our worst computer nightmares. After all, what's one of the worst things that can happen to your computer? That would be hard drive failure. Hard drives contain platters inside that hold all the information. These platters spin, and are read while they spin. The higher RPM they spin at, the higher the performance. But if they stop spinning, you are basically screwed. All of your data is gone, unless you want to spend a small fortune to get it recovered.
So, the small thumb drives aren't like your traditional hard drives. There are no moving parts inside. And this means chance of failure is far less likely to happen. Now the fast performance of small flash drives are now brought to your computer in a larger size. And the need for RAID configurations for back-up security is also gone.
It's features and specs include:
- Sequential Read: up to 270MB/s*
- Sequential Write: up to 230MB/s*
- Interface: SATA I/II
- TRIM Support (O/S dependent)
- RAID Support: Yes
- 128MB DRAM Cache
- Power Consumption: DC 5V, Standby 0.5W, Operating 5.3W
- MTBF: > 1,500,000 Hours
- Data Retention: >5 years at 25° C
- Data Reliability: Built in BCH 9, 24-bit ECC
- Operating Temperature: 0°C~70°C
- Storage Temperature: 40°C~85°C
- Operating Shock: 1,500G (@ 0.5msec half sine wave)
- Vibration Resistance: 20G/80~2000Hz w 3 axis
- Humidity: 0°C to 55°C / 95% RH, 10 cycles
- O/S Support: Win XP / Vista / 7
Build quality appears quite good. Although there is not a whole lot to it. The casing appears to be aluminum. It is a small 2.5" drive. And at the rear are your standard SATA data and power connections. It felt solid enough and well put together. And it was much lighter than a typical hard drive, as there is no dense platter inside.
As you can see from the specs listed below, it is quite speedy. It was the perfect size, so I installed it in my laptop. My hard drive used to be my weakest link. Now it is my strongest, giving me a windows experience index of 6.8. And as you can see from the benchmarks below, it performed very well. When compared to a standard hard drive......well, there really is no comparison. Trying to compare it to a standard hard drive would be like trying to race a new Camero Z28 in a new but stock Ford Focus. Don't do it. And in this case, my stock Seagate 500GB 5400RPM hard drive was the one that got embarrassed. Check out the benchmarks below.

As you can see the Patriot Torqx 2 is an excellent drive. What was probably the slowest component in your computer can now be one of the fastest. The Patriot Torqx 2 is built well, and performs well. SSD drives are the way to go, and the Patriot Torqx 2 performed amazingly without a single glitch. Based on it's features, quality and performance, it has earned our Highly Recommended Award. For more info and complete specs, check out their website at www.patriotmemory.com.
