GPS receivers are a great way to help us get where we need to go. But turn by turn directions down streets is not what we always need. We do not always need directions to a street address. GPS receivers can also be used outdoors. Up for review today is the Magellan eXplorist handheld GPS reciever.

The Magellan eXplorist is not only a rugged GPS reciever, it is also waterproof. These qualities make great for use outdoors. Add to that the fact that it uses two AA batteries for power. Quality and construction is also very good. The color LCD display is indented into the body. That way if it is accidentally dropped, the display is protected. The body is rubberized, to help make it shockproof. This also helps to protect the receiver against bumps and drops. Fit and finish is also very good, giving it the quality many have come to expect from Magellan.

All of these components and features came together well. The Magellan eXplorist 510 performed very well! I really liked some of the features, like starting a new track, and adding waypoints. This lets you mark your exact location when you start, and then add multiple waypoints to mark your way as you go. The Magellan eXplorist 510 will also track your route so you can see where you have been. It was very simple to use hiking and just overall exploring, and did not give me any problems. That is after all the quality that magellan is all about! When you are at your destination, it will also show you the way back to your origin.

It really is loaded with features for the ourdoor lover. The Magellan eXplorist 510 thought of everything when they included the built-in microphone and camera/camcorder. Now there is no need to fear about whether or not you will be able to find that perfect fishing spot where the fish always bite, or the popular trail that the local deer use. Just save the location on your eXplorist 510. To help you remember why that location is the perfect camping/fishing/hunting spot, attach a voice recording where you describe the location, and/or attach an image or video that you can also use to sell your buddies on that perfect spot! The only thing I didn't like with the Magellan eXplorist 510 was the lack of an electronic compass and barametric altimeter. But then again, that is what the eXplorist 610 is for! That aside, the eXplorist really does have a lot of great features!

The Magellan eXplorist was a pleasure to work with. After using it, I cannot imagine camping gear being complete without one. Having heard the family story first hand about how my wife's grandfather and two younger brothers got lost hiking, having it really could be life saving! If you are in the market for a handheld outdoor GPS receiver, I would highly recommend adding it to your short list. Based on it's quality, features, and performance, the Magellan eXplorist 510 has earned our Highly Recommended award.
